Here is the way it works:
The Host Hotel will be the Hilton Garden Inn in Memphis, TN. Downtown Beale Street “Home of the Blues” & “Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll”. The bus will pick up and drop off at THIS hotel on game day. You will be responsible for booking and paying for your own hotel rooms. I booked my room today at $186. / night. There is no cancelation less than 7 days out. (We do NOT have a block of rooms. Hotels now require a commitment – with my Credit Card – for 80% occupancy of the number of rooms in the block. The difference in the block rate and the rate I booked was $5. Not worth the gamble.) Dewey Bolton did the recon on Hotels, and found there is a church convention in town that weekend. So we suggest you Book your room soon. (Thanks Dewey!!)
We plan to have a bus for transportation between the hotel and the game and back 82 miles, so about 76 minutes with a good tail wind. The total cost for a chartered bus is $2,000….. so if we have 40 riders that works out to be $50 a seat. (The bus will have a bathroom.) If you want a seat on the bus, please mail a check for $50 to Mike Havel, 7607 Chalkstone Dallas, Texas 75248. (Cell 972-345-1953) Please also email me when you mail your check. I will hold your checks until we get checks for 40 seats. Then deposit and firm-up bus charter.
BTW, if the bus fills up, we will use the extra cash for refreshments on the bus, and some Elvis CD’s to entertain us on the bus.( Hopefully we will have 40 seats filled in the next 30 days)
As in the past, our goal is to be in Oxford 3 to 3.5 hours before kickoff. Give everyone time to walk the campus, enjoy tailgating at The Grove and have fun. Bus will depart 30 minutes after we win.
The Class will have a happy hour at the hotel the Friday evening before the game.
Class of ’76 will have an early yell practice in the bar at a time when most of our classmates are still awake. Maybe 7:06 PM, or if most are dosing off by that time, we can try for 7:06 AM with coffee.
The Midnight Yell Practice is normally held on Beale Street, near our hotel.
